New Twist On An Old Classic
Since we are staying home and trying to deal with the stress of this virus and all the scary news, I decided to play with a bright line of fabric I recently purchased for the quilt cart. Flour Garden by Linzee Kull McCray for Moda is a new collection of yellows, greens, and blues- perfect for springtime. Now I have played with Me and My Sister Designs Double Wide 4 Patch template before and decided this would make the perfect Springtime table runner.
The instructions are clear and easy to follow but I wanted to do a little tutorial to show you just how easy it is to use this Double Wide 4 Patch Template. This runner just takes one charm pack, one yard of background fabric and 1/2 yd for binding.
The first thing you do is sew all your 5″ squares together.
Now you are going to line up the black lines on your template on the intersection of your four squares. Next you cut around the template as shown in the picture on the right. It helps to use a 28mm rotary cutter if you have one. Keep cutting your 4 intersections until you have completed that row.
For the next row your turn your template going the opposite direction. You will alternate directions each row until you have cut all the rows out. Once you have all your Dresden blades cut out you are going to fold them in half right sides of fabric together.
Now take your blade to your machine and sew a 1/4 inch seam on both ends.
Now turn your blade inside out and this is what it will look like. Take a Purple thing and gently push each end to make your points sharp. Once all your blade is sewn you are going to match up the raw edges and sew a 1/4″ each seams. You will sew 10 blades together to form your Dresden. I pressed the seam open so it would lay flat.
I used a shortened buttonhole stitch to tack my Dresden to the background fabric but you can use whatever method you prefer.
Now there is some scraps leftover. If you can’t stand to waste fabric you can cut those scraps into 2.5″ squares sew them together in a row and make a sashing to go between each block.
Here are a few projects I did using the Double Wide 4 Patch Dresden Template:
I played with the color placement to make this pillow.
Here is another pillow I made. This is a fun template to play with, have fun, experiment.
The template comes with the table-runner pattern called Cherry Pickin.
